Please Help; Do Doctors have to write Narcotics for established patients?
A doctor can decide NOT to write a prescription. If they do not feel comfortable with it, that is just like them saying that they do not believe that patient needs it. Obviously in your case, your father needs narcotic pain meds. Is there any way you can contact his old doctor that moved away? He may be able to give him a new prescription from wherever he moved to. Just make sure the doctor knows that nothing else works, tylenol and all that over the counter stuff does not relive ANY of his pain. I am a nurse and in that situation, I really do not see how any doctor would not renew his prescriptions unless he is not in that much pain.
