In 1962, President John F. Kennedy was faced with a decision to avoid nuclear war. What occurred?

The Soviets had placed missiles in Cuba that were capable of delivering a nuclear strike against the US with only a couple of minutes warning. This was unacceptable to the US, and many urged the occupation of Cuba by the US, but Kennedy chose to embargo the island with the US fleet. Fortunately the USSR, under Kruschev stood down and agreed to rempve the missles. A nuclear confrontation almost occurred between a Russian nuclear armed submarine and the US convoy.
